SCORP, the Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace, is the newest one of the six Standing Committees of IFMSA – Egypt. In Egypt, SCORP was initiated in 2007 to gather medical students from different universities around Egypt and guide them to share in and advocate for humanitarian issues and promote relevant projects in Egypt.
1- Mental Health
CAIRO – 18 April 2018: According to a nation-wide survey recently conducted by the Ministry of Health, 25 percent of the population is found to be suffering from mental health-related problems. The rate of mental illness is increasing especially among young adults, teenagers and children so we target high school and university students to spread awareness about the common mental illness, the importance to care about our mental health and to eliminate the stigma against people with mental illness.
2- Orphan Day: A fun day for orphan children.
3- Together Against Stigma:
The project covers several minorities in our society as target groups. Those target groups are undertreated by our society. So, it has been essential for us as medical students and future healthcare professionals to hold such a project to eliminate the stigma towards them. Those minorities are: Orphans, Down syndrome people, Cancer patients and blind people. We do not only implement psychological support visits for those minority groups, but we also capacitate medical students with the knowledge needed when tackling such minorities as patients.
4- Deaf and Dumb:
Although there are no official statistics for the number of deaf people in Egypt, a 2007 study by the World Health Organization estimated that hearing loss is prevalent in 16% of the population of Egypt. This means
more than 13 million people across all age groups. As is the case in many countries. families with deaf children tend to keep them indoors, not allowing them to play outside or interact with people as they are unable to communicate with other people so we are about to enable medical students to communicate with deaf and dump and spread awareness about the importance for all people to learn sign language as it is their rights towards us.
5- Human Rights camp:
It is necessary to have a safe and peaceful environment that advocate all the rights of all minorities, so we are about to hold a camp that estimate all the rights of all groups.
